“Stronger than ever” – Truck Drivers resume strike in Iran

The National Unions of Truckers and Truck Drivers in Iran have called for strike action again, as the authorities failed to fulfil the promises they had made to the striking drivers.

The organisations published a statement, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of the 262 detained drivers as their first demand.

“We temporarily halted our strike on 13th October to see if the authorities would fulfil any of the promises they have made, but it has become evident that there is no intention nor capacity to deal with the issues we face and to meet our demands. Therefore we resume our national strike on 23rd October 2018, for the fourth time, and stronger than ever. Our strength is in our unity in action to achieve our goals” representatives of the drivers and truckers wrote in their statement.

The previous strike that started in September went on for 21 days and expended to 320 cities. The striking drivers object to the corrupt system in which they can’t make ends meet despite their hard work in detrimental conditions.

In the previous strike the striking drivers attracted popular support from Iranian society as well as international organisations.

In their letter of 17th October 2018 to Ali Khamenei, the Global Union Federations, International Transport Federation (ITF). Education International (E1), IndusriALL Global Union, International Union of Food. Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, Tobacco and Allied Workers Association (IUF), and the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC)) supported the striking drivers, demanded the unconditional and immediate release of the detained drivers and raised concerns over the “lack of judicial independence” in Iran.
