Prisoners’ lives are in danger

War – Bulletin No.6 –  17 March 2026

Act in unity and solidarity — inside and outside the country — to save them

Even in the midst of a war that it itself has caused, the Islamic Republic continues to threaten the people and to threaten political prisoners with execution.

The head of the judiciary, Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei, has invoked Article 1 of the law on “intensifying punishment for espionage and cooperation with the Zionist regime and hostile states” and is threatening prisoners with execution under accusations of collaboration with the enemy during wartime. At the same time, police commander Ahmad-Reza Radan has threatened 500 detainees who have been arrested on charges of “espionage” and sending information to the “enemy and anti-Iranian media,” warning them that they face death.

The Islamic Republic must not be allowed to commit crimes against prisoners under the cover of war. This danger is real and must be taken seriously. With unity and determination, we must act to secure the freedom and safety of our imprisoned loved ones.

All political prisoners — including the tens of thousands of protesters arrested during the Dey uprising and afterwards — must be released immediately and unconditionally. Keeping prisoners behind bars under wartime conditions is itself a crime and a grave violation of human rights.

To save the lives of prisoners, urgent action is required.

Actions inside Iran

  • Expand public awareness of the situation of prisoners and prevent the regime from committing crimes in silence.
  • Broaden the “Tuesdays Against Execution” campaign and amplify the voices of prisoners across Iran and internationally.
  • Publicise globally any attempt by the regime to use prisoners as human shields or transfer them to military bases and installations.
  • In every protest, statement, slogan and act of resistance, make the freedom of prisoners a central demand and warn of the danger threatening tens of thousands of detainees.
  • Stand alongside prisoners’ families and participate in protests in front of prisons and detention centres.

Actions outside Iran and internationally

Following the unprecedented massacre of 18–19 Dey, global awareness and solidarity are stronger than ever. These conditions must be used to mobilise international support to save prisoners’ lives.

  • Iranians abroad should make the freedom of political prisoners and detained protesters the central demand in every rally and demonstration.
  • Call on governments and international institutions to pressure the Islamic Republic, boycott the regime, close its embassies and expel it from international bodies.
  • Contact political parties, human rights organisations, labour unions, student and teachers’ organisations and urge them to publicly condemn the regime’s attempt to use prisoners as human shields, recognising it as a war crime.
  • Hold the Islamic Republic directly responsible for the safety and lives of all prisoners and condemn any harm inflicted under accusations such as espionage.
  • Demand the immediate dispatch of international human rights missions, including United Nations bodies, to inspect prisons and assess prisoners’ conditions.
  • Press governments and international institutions to demand the immediate release of prisoners and an end to torture, executions and forced confessions.

A large international campaign must be launched so that people around the world act to save the lives of prisoners in Iran.

Political prisoners must not be left alone. The protesting society that has repeatedly risen up for freedom, equality and the end of the Islamic Republic can — and must — organise a powerful movement inside and outside the country to defend them and secure their freedom.
