Universities become a frontline of resistance against the regime’s crimes

Protests against the Islamic Republic’s January massacre and ongoing repression are spreading across universities nationwide. Students in dozens of universities — including medical faculties — are boycotting end-of-term examinations, holding sit-ins, strikes, and protest gatherings in solidarity with the people and in opposition to mass killing, arrests, and intimidation. Universities have once again become a key stronghold of the revolution.

On 31 January 2026, more than a thousand students at Ferdowsi University of Mashhad staged a sit-in in front of the Faculty of Medicine, refusing exams and commemorating their murdered classmate, Parsa Saffar. On the same day, students at Jundishapur University of Ahvaz held protest gatherings, while students at Zahedan University of Medical Sciences went on strike. According to reports, students in over thirty universities have now joined the exam-boycott campaign through various forms of protest action.

These protests are part of a broader movement of resistance. Filmmakers, teachers, worker organisations, healthcare workers, and international trade unions have also condemned the regime’s killings and expressed solidarity with the people of Iran. As limited internet access returns, further details of the January atrocities are emerging, and the number of victims continues to rise. Iranian society is united in mourning and justice-seeking, demanding accountability, international prosecution of the regime’s leaders, and a global boycott of this murderous state.
