Railway workers in Iran go on national strike after the authorities fail to fulfil promises

The Railway Line Coordinating Council in Iran has called for a national strike between 27th October and 1st November 2018 after the authorities failed to fulfil promises following months of negotiation and protests.

6500 railway workers are going on strike over 7 urgent demands:

  • Full payment of unpaid wages – and announcement of the exact date for the payments
  • Payment of medical insurance
  • Abolishment of temporary contracts
  • Offer of permanent contracts
  • Right to organise
  • Right of assembly – whenever the workers need to raise any issues they have
  • Immediate stop to expulsion of workers

Workers have said that these are the urgent demands of all railway workers in Iran and must be met immediately.

The striking workers stated that the authorities have failed to fulfil their promises to workers with regard to payment of their wages and bonuses.

Workers of different sections of the railways in Iran have been protesting several issues in the past few months. On June 22nd 2018, the workers in several provinces went on strike over non-payment of wages of 3 to 4 months.
