Determined teachers in Iran continue their struggle in different cities

On 14th February 2019, teachers and retired teachers in Iran protested for their long-standing demands and for the release of jailed teachers.

The teachers held their assemblies in front of the offices of the Ministry of Education in the cities of Urmia, Ardabil, Kermanshah, Sanandaj, Marivan and Mashhad.

The teachers’ first demand is “the immediate and unconditional release of the jailed teachers”. They held up banners and chanted slogans voicing their demands:

  • Immediate and unconditional release of jailed teachers
  • Raising their wages to above the poverty line
  • Free healthcare for all
  • Free education for all
  • And end to the privatisation of schools
  • Quality education for all
  • Safety standards in schools
  • An end to embezzlements
  • Return of embezzled funds and pensions
  • An end to cases of ‘national security’ against activists
  • An end to the militarisation of protests and the workplaces

The protesters in Kermanshah and Sanandaj called for unity between employed and unemployed workers.

All of the protesting teachers across the different cities were united in demanding the release of the jailed workers and in their determination to claim their rights.

Teachers and retired teachers in Tehran have called for a protest on 19th February 2019 in front of the Ministry of Labour.

On 7th February 2019, teachers and retired teachers in Isfahan gathered under Zayanderud bridge, in front of the Kowsar Hotel in support of the farmers’ ‘water share’ struggle. The protesters chanted slogans against injustice, the arrests of teachers, torture and the broadcast of forced confessions of worker activists. The protesters also called for unity between teachers and farmers.
