On 27th November 2018, the Coordinating Council of Teachers’ Association in Iran released a statement in which they issued an ultimatum to the government for the release of the imprisoned teachers and called for an end to the persecution of teachers.
In the statement that gives an ultimatum of one week, the council emphasises the following urgent demands:
Immediate and unconditional release of all detained teachers
Issuing an order to prevent persecution of teachers
Dismissal of the judicial cases against the teachers
In the previous strike of teachers in October, the authorities arrested seven teachers: Mohamadreza Ramazanzadeh, Hosein Ramazanpour, Ali Forutan, Omid Shah Mohamadi, Pirouz Nami, Ali Krooshat and Mohamdali Zahmatkesh.
One of the main campaigns of teachers in Iran is for the release of all detained teachers and revocation of all security and prison sentences against workers, teachers and activists.
Esmail Abdi, Mohamad Habibi, Mahmood Beheshti, and Ruhollah Mardani are the teachers who have been in prison for a long time. The campaigning teachers keep the public informed about the situation of the imprisoned teachers and organise visits of the detainees’ families to show their solidarity with the dissident teachers.
Teachers also demand free, quality education for all, an increase of teachers’ wages to above the poverty line, fair contracts and an end to work pressure on teachers.
In the ultimatum, the council announces that if nothing is done to address the urgent demands, they will be left with no option but to go on strike and call on the families of students to join their protest, as they all share the same issues.
