Rail workers in Iran say “No”! to authorities and employers over non-payment of wages

On 6th March 2019, rail workers in Tabriz, Iran, entered their 19th day of strike and protest over non-payment of wages. Workers blocked the railway at Zarei station and the supportive commuters walked to the city centre. A delegation of representatives of the railway management, the governor’s office, the provincial governor’s office and the Intelligence Services of the Islamic Republic came to the striking workers and asked them to go back to work but they said “no” and demanded full payment of their wages.

Rail workers in other cities have also been challenging the issue. In Tehran, Shahrood, Khoram Abad, Hormozgan, Aagros, Mashhad, Andimeshek and Isfahan, workers are struggling to get paid for the work they do. The authorities keep making empty promises.

In Lorestan, the striking workers gathered in front of the provincial governor’s office and chanted: “We have neither insurance nor food, incompetent authorities must resign!”

In Bandar Abbas, the rail workers gathered in their workplace. Previously, they had held assemblies in front of the provincial governor’s office.

The rail workers in Iran are moving towards a national strike, as the authorities fail to pay their wages.
