More railway workers join the national strike in Iran

On 28th October 2018, railway workers from Shahrood, Semnan, Damghan, Zagros, Hormozgan, Lorestan and workers of diesel maintenance in Tehran joined the national strike of the railway workers in Iran.

The Railway Line Coordinating Council in Iran called for a strike between 27th October and 1st November 2018 as the authorities failed to fulfil their promises to pay unpaid wages and meet the demands of the workers which were outlined in the strike statement:

  • Full payment of unpaid wages – and announcement of the exact date for the payments
  • Payment of medical insurance
  • Abolishment of temporary contracts
  • Offer of permanent contracts
  • Right to organise
  • Right to assembly – whenever the workers need to raise any issues they have
  • Immediate stop to expulsion of workers

Many workers in different industries in Iran face similar issues as the railway workers. Delay in payment of wages, non-payment of wages, mass expulsion of workers, lack of right to organise, lack of right of assembly and protest are some of the issues which the authorities don’t address. Workers in many industries have been forced to go on strike.
