On 14th October 2018, truck drivers agreed to temporarily halt their strike after the authorities accepted three of their demands.
On 13th October, organisations of truckers and drivers of road transportation released a statement in which they announced the agreement with the authorities. They stressed that this was just a temporary end to the strike and that the drivers are determined to claim all of their demands.
During the three weeks of the strike that reached 320 cities, the striking drivers drew society’s attention to their harsh working conditions and difficulties which many people and workers of other industries in society share. The strike lifted the spirit of unity and hope.
The authorities and organisations of truckers and drivers agreed on changes in hire rates, routes, transit management and the supply of transportation in liaison with different sectors of society. The truckers succeeded in getting involved in some of the fundamental ways their work is managed and also to involve different sectors of society in the matter of transportation.
During the strike, the authorities arrested 256 striking drivers and the truck drivers are still fighting to get their colleagues released. The drivers stressed that their struggle for fairness, ending corruption, ending repression, for equality, for right to organise and for a higher standard of life is not finished and they continue to seek their rights.
