On 23 September, 2018, truck drivers in 80 cities in Iran restarted their strike. In the ongoing strike most main terminals are empty and drivers haven’t turn up for loading goods.
The truck drivers who went on strike in 170 cities in May over various issues are left with no option but to go on strike again as the authorities failed to fulfil their promises and meet drivers’ legitimate demands.
Strike Coordinating Committee of the workers has mentioned the following objections and demands in their Strike Statement:
- High prices
- Lack of jobs
- Lack of job security
- Delayed payment of wages
- Lack of right to workers’ organisation
- Lack of right to formation of worker unions and syndicates
- Empty promises of authorities
- Unsafe roads
- Lack of recognition of the job as a detrimental job
In reaction to the strike, Mr Jahangiri, president’s first deputy, announced a legislation for immediate tyre supply but the strike coordinating committee rejected it and announced that “our aim is not just to receive tyre and oil and auto parts, it’s to end the oppression and inequality in society.”
Truck drivers’ strike has received popular support in Iran.
