Worker-communist Party of Iran’s protest statement
3 August 2021
The EU has just announced that it is to send Enrique Mora, its deputy external affairs chief, to attend the inauguration ceremony of Ebrahim Raisi on August 5th.
Ebrahim Raisi is a wanted criminal, responsible for the murder of thousands of political prisoners in the 1988 Prison Massacre, when thousands of political dissidents, most of whom had already served their prison terms, were in large groups secretly executed and their bodies were dumped in mass graves. He is also responsible for the imprisonment, torture and execution of thousands of political dissidents and protesters during his long years in office as chief prosecutor and head of the judiciary of the Islamic Republic.
Ebrahim Raisi was not elected by the people of Iran as president, but was handpicked as president by the leader of the Islamic Republic Ali Khamenei during a fraudulent “election” in June, which was overwhelmingly boycotted by the people of Iran. He and his regime are not the representative, but the murderer of the people of Iran.
Ebrahim Raisi ought to be indicted and prosecuted for his crimes against humanity, not welcomed and appeased, as the EU shamelessly has decided to do. Indeed, a colleague of Ebrahim Raisi’s, Hamid Nouri, who served under him in the same “Death Commission” in 1988, which carried out the wholesale massacre of political prisoners, is soon due to go on trial in Sweden for war crimes and mass murder.
Deciding to send a representative to the inauguration of Ebrahim Raisi is another disgraceful episode in the foreign policy of the EU towards Iran’s Islamic Republic. It is such policies which for 42 years have allowed the regime in Iran to murder tens of thousands of people in secret and with impunity. Were it not for the co-operation and support of the Western governments, in particular the EU, the people of Iran would have overthrown this vile regime many years ago. Indeed, were it not for the support of the Western governments, this regime, whose leaders hijacked the people’s revolution in 1979, would not even exist.
We condemn this disgraceful decision of the EU in the strongest possible terms and demand that it be withdrawn immediately. This decision is a slap in the face of the people of Iran who are fighting in the harshest of circumstances to get rid of this murderous regime. It is an affront to all those around the world and particularly international human rights organisations and activists, who have been documenting the atrocities of the Islamic Republic and calling for Ebrahim Raisi and the other leaders of the Islamic Republic to be investigated and prosecuted for genocide and crimes against humanity.
We call on all those appalled by this disgraceful decision of the EU, as a first step to voice their outrage by writing to the EU Commission President and demanding the immediate reversal of their disgraceful decision. We call on everyone, wherever they can, to attend the protest gatherings called by our party in many European and North American cities on Ebrahim Raisi’s inauguration day, 5th August.

“I am appalled by your disgraceful decision to send Enrique Mora, Deputy Secretary-General of the EU’s European External Action Service, to attend the inauguration ceremony of mass murderer Ebrahim Raisi. Ebrahim Raisi was the head of a “Death Commission” which in the summer of 1988 on the orders of Khomeini carried out the wholesale secret massacre of thousands of political prisoners, dumping their bodies in mass graves. He is also responsible for the imprisonment, torture and murder of thousands of political dissidents and protesters during his long years in office in the judiciary of the Islamic Republic. I understand that Amnesty International and the United Nations human rights investigator on Iran, Mr Javaid Rehman, among others, have called for independent investigations into Ebrahim Raisi’s role in the 1988 Prison Massacres. I further understand that another member of the same “Death Commission” in 1988, Hamid Nouri, is currently in jail in Sweden awaiting imminent trial on charges of war crimes and mass murders. I demand that you withdraw this decision immediately and stop appeasing Iran’s Islamic regime and granting political legitimacy to that regime and its criminal president Ebrahim Raisi.”
