Worker-communist Party of Iran condemns heinous sentences of imprisonment and flogging against Nasrin Sotoudeh

Human rights lawyer, Nasrin Sotoudeh has been sentenced to 38 years in prison and 148 lashes by one of the Islamic Republic’s bogus courts, without the presence of her lawyer.

The judge, Mohammad Moghiseh, one of the regime’s criminals, has said the length of Nasrin Sotoudeh’s sentence is seven years; however, Sotoudeh’s partner, Reza Khandan, has said that the sentence is 38 years in prison and 148 lashes. The sentences relate to two cases: five years in prison for the first case, and 33 years plus 148 lashes for the second case.

The charges against Nasrin Sotoudeh are: “Assembly and conspiracy against national security, propaganda against the Islamic Republic, membership of illegal organisations, inciting people to corruption and prostitution, appearance at the hearing without a hijab, disturbance of public order and peace and spreading false information to perturb the public’s mind”. Indeed, judged by the corrupt system of judiciary of the Islamic Republic, the majority of the people of Iran would be deemed offenders!

The overwhelming majority of the people of Iran consider the Islamic Republic a corrupt, reactionary and inhumane regime, responsible for the insecurity and destruction of the lives of the many. Such sentences only exacerbate the anger of the people against the regime.

By contriving bogus cases against lawyers and by jailing them, the Islamic Republic tries to prevent them from defending political prisoners and political activists, thereby effectively denying the prisoners the right to an attorney. However, these acts of repression will not save the regime. The Islamic Republic’s criminal judges and leaders are well aware that this regime will not last long, and soon Judge Moghiseh, Ebrahim Raisi, the new head of the Judiciary, and the rest of the criminals who in the Judiciary, the Islamic National Assembly, the Government, the House of the Supreme Leader and other organs of the regime have been committing atrocities against the people, will be put on trial in people’s courts for 40 years of repression, crime, embezzlement, freeloading and the pauperisation of the overwhelming majority of the people.

The Worker-communist Party of Iran strongly condemns the barbaric sentences of imprisonment and flogging against Nasrin Sotoudeh and calls on the people to protest against this blatant brazenness of the regime and the criminal sentences passed on other social activists. The demand for the immediate release of all jailed lawyers, worker activists, social campaigners and all political prisoners must become a key demand of all the protests and strikes.
