Gunmen attacked a military parade by Iran’s Islamic Republic in the southern city of Ahvaz today, resulting in 25 deaths and a large number of injuries.
The military forces of Iran’s Islamic regime are part and parcel of its machinery of repression and murder, and their parades in cities are an attempt to show off this repressive force. However, this armed attack has nothing to do with people’s fight against the regime and its repressive forces. In fact, it is an act against the revolutionary movement of the people.
So far, a group describing itself as Ahvaz National Resistance, to which also belongs the nationalist Al-Ahvaz group, as well as the ultra-reactionary Islamic State have claimed responsibility for the attack. But whatever the facts may be, this action is a blessing for a crisis-ridden regime, which finds itself under siege by the protests and struggles of the people. Following this incident, the regime will try, on the one hand, to tighten the police atmosphere in the province of Khuzestan and in the whole of Iran, and, on the other hand, to whip up nationalist, religious and ethnic hatred and divisions. However, such attempts will fail in the face of people’s united revolutionary movement. For a long time, people in cities like Ahvaz, Tehran, Sanandaj, Tabriz, Qom and Mashahd, and throughout Iran, have declared their determination to topple this regime, through such slogans as ‘We don’t want an Islamic Republic’. The future of Iranian society will be decided not by the reactionary stirrings of ethnic-religious forces in the opposition, nor by the repression of the regime. It will be decided by the united, nationwide struggle of the people against poverty, inequality and lack of rights. The magnificent general strike by the people of Kurdistan last week against executions and against the regime’s military attack on the opposition forces in Kurdistan was the latest expression of this struggle.
The Worker-communist Party of Iran stands with full force against the regime’s attempts to create a police atmosphere and its policies of repression, as well as against the armed stirrings and divisive actions of ethnic-religious forces. The party invites people throughout Iran for even greater unity and solidarity in their revolutionary struggle to overthrow the Islamic Republic.
