Numerous cities on strike in Iran on first day of a three-day call for protests and strikes

Following calls in the past week for strikes and protests across the country on 5th, 6th and 7th of December, strikes have begun today in numerous cities of Iran as part of the revolutionary movement to overthrow the Islamic Republic. The scale of the collective closure of shops, markets (bazaars) and trades across Iran has been unprecedented since the 1979 revolution.

According to news reaching us so far, market traders, shops and businesses all over the country, truck drivers and truckers nationally, workers of petrochemical terminals and storages in the southern city of Mahshahr, petrochemical workers in the western city of Sanandaj, workers of Isfahan Cement and workers of Al-Mehdi Aluminium in the southern port of Bandar Abbas have been on strike.

In nearly 100 cities across Iran, shops and markets have shut down as part of the protests. In the capital Tehran, its shopping districts such as the Grand Bazaar, the Shemiran Gate Bazaar, Cheragh-e Bargh, Baagh-e Sepahsalar, Saadi, Abdul Abad and bazaars in other parts of the city have all been closed.

Shops and businesses have also closed in many other cities, districts and towns across Iran, including in major cities and districts such as Esfahan, Hamedan, Ahvaz, Kermanshah, Oshnavieh, Shahr-e Kord, Paveh, Shiraz, Karaj, Tabriz, Kerman, Baneh, Urmia, Saqqez, Bandar Anzali, Ardabil, Lahijan, Kamiyaran, Bandar Abbas, Rasht, Mahabad, Arak, Dezful, Bojnord, Chabahar, Bushehr, Divandareh, Javanroud, Sanandaj, Marivan, Mashhad, Behbahan, Fouladshahr, Bukan, Rezvanshahr Industrial Town and many more.

University students, who were among those who had called the national three-day protests and strikes for this week, also began their protests today, including in the universities of Shiraz and Hormozgan, Sanandaj and Allameh in Tehran.

Streets protests have also started since early this morning. In Tehran, the students of one of the schools came out on the streets singing the revolutionary song “Baraye” (“For”). At Khajeh Abdullah metro station in Tehran people chanted “Death to the dictator”, and in Tehran’s Cheragh Bargh street people chanted: “This is the last message: the whole system is the target”, “All these legions of the people have come to fight the (Islamic Republic) Leader”, “Death to the dictator” and “Death to Khamenei”. In the Kurdish city of Marivan, people blocked the streets by lighting fires.

Banners and posters calling for further strikes and protests tomorrow and on Wednesday have been posted in cities across Iran. People are united and determined, preparing for the coming days’ protests and strikes.
