On 10th May 2018, the Coordination Committee of Teachers’ Association in Iran released a statement that calls for a national strike on 14th and 15th October. Retired workers from different industries are also going to hold nationwide protests on 16th October.
The strike is over long-standing, unresolved issues that teachers face in Iran:
- High prices of goods
- Inflation
- Poverty
- inability of teachers to make ends meet
- Tuition fees
- Growing privatisation of schools
- Exclusion of more children from education
- Commercialisation of education
- Embezzlement in the education system
- Stealing teachers’ pensions
The committee called the situation of the teachers “impossible” and urged them not to attend classrooms.
The committee also calls on the families of students and the rest of society, as the issues include “free education for all”, “high quality education for all”, “safe schools”, “free healthcare for all”, “employment of enough teachers to meet the needs”, as well as “return of teachers’ funds”.
Retired workers from different industries have also called for a nationwide protest on 16th October, as they face some similar issues including poverty, discrimination, high prices and having to live below the poverty line. They also call for “free healthcare for all” and “free education for all”.
