Striking steel workers face armed forces in Iran: “We defend ourselves. Go and chase the mafia!”

On 24th November 2018, workers of the Steel National Group of Ahwaz in Khuzestan province, Iran, entered the 12th day of their strike.

The striking workers held their assembly in front of the provincial governor’s office and chanted “We, Steel Workers against Oppression and Injustice. We fight!”, “Government, Mafia, Happy Unity!”, “Workers rather die than to accept abjection”. They then marched towards the city centre.

The armed forces confronted the workers at Naderi Bridge but couldn’t stop the determined and united masses of striking workers.

The armed forces couldn’t hold their lines and once the workers had passed through their lines, they attacked the workers from behind and injured some of them.

The workers came to the aid of their colleagues and called on the people to support them. After the clashes, the workers went ahead as planned and continued their protest.

Karim Syahi, one of the representatives of the Steel National Group of Ahwaz, delivered a speech in which he reflected on the event and addressed the armed forces: “We don’t want you to defend the city. We defend ourselves. Go and chase the mafia! Go and pull out your batons for those who have imposed misery on the workers, not at me, who is fighting for my right!”  The workers confirmed by cheering.
