Striking sugar cane workers in Iran continue to protest as Ministry of Labour spreads rumour of end of strike

On 24th November 2018, striking sugar cane workers of Haft Tapeh in Khuzestan province, Iran, entered the 20th day of their strike.

The deputy minister of the Ministry of Labour, Mr Yavari, spread the rumour that the strike had ended and the workers’ demands had been dealt with. The response from the workers was another day of assembly and loud protests in front of the governor’s office.

The workers insist on their demands, including the immediate and unconditional release of their elected representative and leader, Ismail Bakhshi, as well as the student and activist, Sepideh Gholian; dismissal of all security cases against the workers; expulsion of the current directors of the corporation whose embarrassing deeds are evident; management of the corporation under supervision of the workers’ council; payment of all of their unpaid wages.
